Overview

Galmet RustPaint is a fast-drying, epoxy enamel designed to protect and finish both new and old metal surfaces. Its epoxy-modified formula gives excellent adhesion to steel, creating a tough, abrasion-resistant coating that helps guard against corrosion.

Engineered for demanding environments, Galmet Rust Paints are trusted across construction, mining, fabrication, and infrastructure projects. From heavy equipment maintenance to structural steel, they deliver reliable, long-term protection where durability matters most.

Product Description

In heavy industries like mining, fabrication and utilities, downtime is costly. Every hour lost to maintenance or repairs puts pressure on productivity and increases operating costs. Galmet RustPaint is more than just a protective coating. It is a critical part of ensuring assets stay in service for longer, with fewer interruptions.

By delivering long-lasting corrosion resistance and a durable finish, Galmet RustPaint helps extend maintenance intervals, reduce the frequency of rework, and give site managers greater certainty around equipment performance. For maintenance engineers, that means less time spent on repainting and more confidence that steel assets will continue to perform under tough conditions.

The value of Galmet RustPaint is not only in its protective chemistry but in the productivity it safeguards. It plays a key role in lowering the total cost of asset ownership by protecting against one of the most persistent industrial challenges: corrosion.

Product Features

  • Excellent adhesion to steel If a rust paint does not bond firmly to steel, it can peel or flake, leaving bare metal exposed. Galmet RustPaint provides excellent adhesion to steel, creating a strong, reliable coating that helps maintain protection and appearance over time.

  • Easy to apply Whether you have been applying rust paint for years or it is your first time, Galmet RustPaint is straightforward to use. By following the simple instructions below or in the technical data sheet, you can achieve a reliable protective finish without delays.

  • Good re-coat ability Second coats that do not bond properly can bubble, lift, or dry unevenly, leaving weak spots in protection. Galmet RustPaint is designed to bond not just to metal but also to itself, so every additional coat goes on evenly and builds consistent protection.

  • Excellent anti-corrosive effect Corrosion is one of the biggest challenges in protecting steel. Lesser coatings may slow rust but do not stop it effectively. Galmet RustPaint delivers an epoxy-modified formula with excellent anti-corrosive effect, helping extend the service life of steel.

  • Fast drying Traditional epoxy enamels are known for slow drying times, which can hold up projects. Galmet RustPaint dries and is ready for recoating faster than typical epoxy enamels, helping you keep work moving without unnecessary delays.

  • Brush or roller application Galmet RustPaint can be applied by brush or roller for reliable coverage on steel structures. For spray application, see Galmet RustPaint Aerosol.

  • High gloss A dull or uneven finish can make metalwork harder to maintain and less durable in appearance. Galmet RustPaint cures to a tough, high-gloss enamel that resists wear and enhances the look of steel, giving a consistent finish that stands up over time.

Applications

Galmet RustPaint is engineered for demanding industrial and commercial environments where long-term metal protection is essential. Its proven performance makes it suitable for large-scale and heavy-duty projects, including:

  • General fabrication

  • Asset management and utilities

  • Industrial machinery and equipment

  • Trailers and transport industry applications

  • Structural steelwork

By providing a tough, durable coating, Galmet RustPaint helps extend maintenance intervals, keeping equipment and assets in service for longer and reducing costly downtime across key industries.

How to Use Galmet RustPaint

Best practice application for industrial projects

This guide provides an overview of how Galmet RustPaint can be used as part of a surface preparation and coating process. The Galmet range is designed as a complete protective system, with rust converters, primers and topcoats developed to work together across different conditions. The steps below show where RustPaint fits in that process. For detailed instructions tailored to your project, always refer to the technical data sheet (TDS) before use.

  1. Assess the substrate Before painting, evaluate the steel surface for contamination or corrosion. Rust, mill scale, grease, or salt deposits all reduce coating performance if not treated correctly.

  2. Surface preparation Prepare steel by abrasive blasting, sanding, or power tool cleaning to remove mill scale, loose rust, and old coatings. Oil and grease should be cleaned with suitable solvents. Salt-exposed steel should be washed with fresh water. Where rust cannot be completely removed, treat with Galmet Ironize Rust Converter prior to priming.

  3. Priming system  Select the correct primer for the conditions:

  4. Application Mix thoroughly before use. Apply evenly by brush or roller, maintaining recommended film thickness for maximum durability. Avoid excessive build on edges and corners.

Recoating

After the first coat, assess the surface. A light sanding is recommended to achieve a smoother finish. Apply additional coats as necessary to achieve the required coverage and protection.

Galmet Ironize is a fast reacting rust converter and sealer which can be applied directly to a rusty surface.

Galmet Ironize is used where it is impossible or impractical to remove rust before painting. Once treated with Galmet Ironize the rusted surface does not require the application of a Cold Galvanizing product.

Cold Galvanizing needs to be applied directly to clean steel. Clean up and use of Galmet Ironize is easy because it is water based. Galmet Ironize does not need to be rinsed off the surface before top-coating like other similar products on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint over rust with Galmet RustPaint?

Yes, but if rust cannot be completely removed, first treat the surface with Galmet Ironize Rust Converter, then prime with Galmet Keytite Steel Primer before applying Galmet RustPaint. This ensures the surface is properly prepared and protected.

Is Galmet RustPaint available in aerosol cans?

Yes. Galmet RustPaint is also available in convenient aerosol spray cans for smaller or detailed applications. For more information, see the Galmet RustPaint Aerosol page.

For aerosol application, see the dedicated Galmet RustPaint Aerosol page.

How much area does Galmet RustPaint cover?

Coverage is typically 5–10 square metres per litre, depending on the surface and application method.

For aerosol application, see the dedicated Galmet RustPaint Aerosol page.

How long does Galmet RustPaint take to dry?

Drying times vary depending on conditions such as temperature, humidity and film thickness. In normal environments, Galmet RustPaint is touch dry in around two hours and can be recoated after 4–6 hours. For large projects, always allow for environmental factors when scheduling work.
